What Are We Smiling About This Year?

This year, proceeds from the Rockin' Big Give will go towards the first Ronald McDonald House in Newfoundland and Labrador - which is the first ever Ronald McDonald House in 17 years.

Ronald McDonald House Newfoundland and Labrador (RMHNL) is a registered charity formed to construct and operate our province's first Ronald McDonald House. RMHNL's Ronald McDonald House will be located within five minutes walk of Newfoundland and Labrador's only dedicated pediatric hospital, the Janeway Children's Health and Rehabilitation Centre. Our House will offer our Province's sick children and their families a home-away-from-home – a warm, compassionate and comfortable home environment for a nominal fee.

2009 - Smiles for Stella Burry and Veral Perlin Society

Stella Burry Foundation

For 30 years, Stella Burry Community Services (SBCS) has provided counseling and support in a caring atmosphere to marginalized youth and adults, assisting them to develop skills that will enable them to have greater autonomy and responsibility for their own lives and to become contributing members of society.   With operations situated in St. John’s, Newfoundland, SBCS serves the entire province with programs that do not exist elsewhere. The organization has been recognized many times both locally and nationally for its work in the province.

Vera Perlin Society

Prior to 1954, no special services were available to parents of children with a developmental disability in Newfoundland and Labrador. In that year, having become interested in the problem, Mrs. Vera Perlin began plans to establish a classroom for children with a developmental disability. In the autumn of 1954, the first classroom was opened with an enrollment of seven children. Today, the Vera Perlin Socieity delivers programs thorough four divisions: Careeer Development, Employment, Community Lving and Administration, operating numerous programs for those with disabilities.

The Perlin Centre houses the Society’s day program, which provides a quality structured program to individuals with a developmental disability 18 years of age or older. Proposed renovations will reinvigorate the program and the people it serves, providing a quality home to a much-needed service.
